ESCORTED & HOSTED

This grand tour of Costa Rica includes the country's main ecology sites and days of relaxation on the beaches of the Pacific coast. After an independent stay in San Jose, there will be a guided tour cruising the canals of Tortuguero National Park, where you will see a variety of birds, monkeys, sloths and crocodiles, as well as a chauffeur driven tour of other Costa Rican highlights. Poas Volcano with its mile wide active crater and hot water lake, is followed by a visit to Arenal, where you can bathe in the Tabacon Hot Springs, with a view of Arenal volcano that has frequent fire eruptions. You will visit Cano Negro wildlife refuge and Monteverde Cloud Forest where you can see an immense variety of birds including the splendid Quezal. After a visit to Carara Biological Reserve, continue south to Manuel Antonio where in addition to visiting the National Park there are splendid beaches to enjoy. To end this perfect vacation there will be a relaxing stay in the beach resort area of Guanacaste.
   
 
Suggested Intinerary
 
             
  Day 1 - USA / San Jose
Morning flight departure to San Jose.
Transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free.
    Day 8 - Arenal / Monteverde
Morning at leisure, to relax by the hotel's swimming pool. Afternoon drive alongside the Arenal Lake, where you will enjoy splendid views, before reaching the Monteverde Cloud Forest nestled high in the Tilaran Mountains. (B)
             
  Day 2 - San Jose
Today you can go on an optional city tour of San Jose, including visits to La Sabana Metropolitan Park, the National Theatre and the National Museum, where you will see fine examples of pre-Columbian art. (B)
    Day 9 - Monteverde
After breakfast you will visit Monteverde Biological Reserve. Composed of diverse ecological communities of flora and fauna, this large private reserve is home to an immense variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and hundreds of bird species, including the legendary Quetzal. Afternoon free. You can go hiking, horseback riding, visit the Butterfly Garden and the Hummingbird Gallery. (B)
             
  Day 3 - San Jose
Day free in San Jose. You can go on an optional tour of the nearby village of Sarchi, to watch craftsmen hand-paint the traditional oxcarts and shop for souvenirs. (B)
    Day 10 - Monteverde /Carara /Manuel Antonio
Morning departure to Carara Biological Reserve, for an escorted visit. Its marshes, formed by seasonal flooding of the Grande de Tarcoles River, are rich in amphibians and reptiles. Mammals inhabiting the area include two-toed sloths, monkeys, margay cats and white-tailed deer. In the afternoon continue travelling south along the Pacific coast to Manuel Antonio.   Day 4 - San Jose / Tortuguero
This morning traveling east towards the Caribbean Coast, you will visit Braulio Carrillo National Park and will see a variety of landscapes including cloud forest, dense jungle, rivers and waterfalls. On the coast you will board a boat, which will take you through the Tortuguero canals to the Lodge. (B,L,D)
    Day 11 - Manuel Antonio
To enter Manuel Antonio National Park you have to walk through a few feet of shallow ocean water, which gives you a sense of adventure. Inside you will see a variety of birds and you may also find trogons, herons and monkeys. Between your exploratory walks, you can enjoy a swim in the park's white sand beach, considered the best in Costa Rica. (B)
             
  Day 5 - San Jose
Your morning boat tour will take you through one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country. The National Park of Tortuguero is a nesting sight for the green turtle and you will have the opportunity to see monkeys and other mammals, as well as an immense variety of birds. Afternoon at leisure. You can rent a canoe to explore the area at your own pace. (B,L,D)
    Day 12 - Manuel Antonio
Day free to enjoy the facilities at your hotel and soak up the sun on the sandy beach. You can also visit the nearby village of Quepos or go on an offshore fishing adventure. (B)
             
  Day 6 - Tortuguero / Poas / Arenal
Morning departure on a short flight to San Jose. From there you travel north to see the mighty Poas Volcano, with it's mile wide active crater and hot water lake. Continue through the farm land of San Carlos to Tilajari. Night tour to Tabacon Spa, where you can bathe in the hot springs before your dinner in the panoramic restaurant and observe the majestic Arenal Volcano, with its frequent fire eruptions. (B,D)
    Day 13 - Guanacaste / USA
Morning flight to San Jose, connecting with your return flight to USA. (B)
             
  Day 7 - Arenal / Cano Negro / Arenal
Today you will travel north for a tour of the Cano Negro wildlife refuge. There you can see turtles, iguanas, crocodiles and many species of birds, including pink pelicans. Return to Tilajari for overnight. (B,L)
